The clinic is proud to announce that two of its physiotherapists passed the Intermediate Canadian Exams in manual therapy in the spring of 2009. We want to congratulate Benoit Filiatrault and Stéphanie Bourdages for all their work and perseverance. Completing these exams recognizes their knowledge and competence in the field.

Elaine Maheu was an invited speaker at two conferences this year. In May, she spoke on the topic of “Clinical Lumbar Instability” at the “Congrès des médecins du sport du Québec” in Québec City and in November, she was a keynote speaker in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she also spoke on the same topic. Both her talks were very well received. In 2010, she has been invited to speak at the FMOQ (Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec) Congress in March. The topic of her talk will be “Beyond Conventional Physiotherapy” where she will speak about manual therapy, Gunn intramuscular stimulation, myofascial techniques and the use of rehabilitative ultrasound in muscle recruitment. In July 2010, both Doreen and Elaine have been invited to speak at the Canadian Physiotherapy Association Congress in St-John’s, Newfoundland. Doreen will speak on the knee and Elaine on neural mobility.

This summer, a new massage therapist joined our team. Her name is Sofi Dagenais. Sofi utilises different treatment techniques, of which a new concept called “ostéodynamie”. This treatment approach, also used by our other massage therapist, Annie Boucher, has been clinically very useful in the treatment of chronic pain syndromes. Ostéodynamie is an approach based on optimal bony alignment by releasing chains of muscles thereby improving joint mobility. Sofi is also qualified in lymphatic drainage, a useful technique for chronic oedema.

Many of our physiotherapists had the opportunity to take an advanced course on the thorax with world renowned Canadian physiotherapists Diane Lee and Linda-Joy Lee. This excellent course gave us a more thorough understanding of the thorax and its relationship to lumbar and pelvic pain.

In June, most of our physiotherapists took courses with Michael Shacklock, an Australian physiotherapist. Michael has an expertise in the treatment of conditions involving abnormal neural mobility. These courses gave us more tools to assess and treat these conditions.

We continue to use Gunn intramuscular stimulation (IMS) with many of our patients who present with chronic muscle tensions which are so common. This approach, which we have been practicing for the past 3 years at the clinic, has been a very useful adjunct to our manual therapy techniques.

Under the section patient education , you can read some new articles that we have written to inform our patients on proper sitting posture, scar tissue healing, the temporomandibular joint and the importance of proper positioning of the shoulder blades.
