What's new at Physiothérapie Maheu Killens? The year 2011 has been a very special year for us, as we celebrated our 20th anniversary, having opened the clinic in January 1991. We are proud of the accomplishments of the clinic during the past 2 decades, in particular our efforts to keep up to date with evidence-based practice. For 20 years now, we have been the leaders in post-graduate education for physiotherapists in Québec. We have been instrumental in fostering advanced knowledge in the field of orthopaedics and manual therapy in particular. We have done this, in part, by inviting clinical specialists from around the world to help keep us up to date on the changes to our profession that have evolved as a result of an explosion of research that is being done.
Elaine and Doreen have long been involved as teachers and examiners for the Canadian post-graduate program of education in Manual Therapy. Elaine was invited to speak at a Forum on Manual Therapy in Paris in October and the French are so impressed with the Canadian post-graduate program that they have asked the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association if the Québec teachers could start teaching the Canadian manual therapy program in France as of 2012. Elaine will be leading the group of instructors and will be heading the implementation of this program in France. This is a special collaboration between the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, the AQPMO (Association québécoise de la physiothérapie manuelle orthopédique) and France.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Manon Côté, a general practitioner with expertise in Sports Medicine, has joined our team since October 2011. Dr. Côté is a former physiotherapist who trained at Ohio State University and holds a diploma in the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise. Her timely consults will no doubt be appreciated by both physiotherapists and general practitioners alike.
The clinic is proud to announce that one of their physiotherapists, Alla Issakova has just recently completed her Intermediate Exams in Manual Therapy, a first step towards specialization in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy. This advanced training in Manual Therapy entails a lot of work and dedication, which in turn benefits our clients. Congratulations Alla for your hard work and perseverance. Alla is also certified to practice Gunn IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation), a form of dry needling using acupuncture needles that has been shown to have excellent results for chronic pain conditions. We now have 4 physiotherapists on staff that practice this technique.
Stéphanie Bourdages, who completed her Advanced Diploma in Manual Therapy last year, has begun assisting on post-grad courses, with a goal of obtaining her teaching certification with the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
Elaine continues to work on the organisation of the next IFOMPT Conference (International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists) which will take place in September 2012 in Québec City. Elaine is the co-president of this prestigious congress which is held every 4
years on various continents of the world. More than 1200 participants are expected to attend. This is a great opportunity for physiotherapists and medical practitioners to hear from the top clinicians and researchers in orthopaedic manual therapy. For more information visit the web site at www.ifomptconference.org
The clinic has organised some great courses in the past year. One of them was a course from the Neuro-Orthopaedic Institute (NOI group from Australia) entitled Mobilisation of the Nervous System. This course proved to be invaluable in differentiating the various stages and patho-physiological processes that can occur when there is pathology around the nervous system and in treating conditions where loss of neural mobility nervous system is involved. Just recently, the clinic invited Carol Kennedy, a chief examiner for the Orthopaedic Division of CPA and a renowned speaker on dysfunctions of the cervical spine. Her course was entitled Exercise Prescription for Cervical Dysfunction. It was an excellent clinical course which clarified the various stages in the rehabilitation of core muscle dysfunction of the cervical spine. It also included the treatment approach for proprioception dysfunction involving the neck. Patients who suffer from chronic neck pain frequently have a component of muscle imbalance, which necessitates a very precise approach to rehabilitation. All of our physiotherapists (and their patients!) have benefited from this approach to treatment.
The clinic continues to offer physiotherapy services, osteopathy, acupuncture and massage therapy. Our treatment approach still emphasizes the active participation of the patient, where they learn about their condition, recognize the cause(s) of their movement dysfunction and learn to correct the way they move. Postural correction and control remain one of the key issues that we deal with in therapy.
We hope to continue to help your patients in the next year and we encourage you to contact us if you would like to discuss one of your patient’s conditions. We look forward to working with you in helping people get back to active living.
All the best for 2012!
